This illustration was for a Materials & Techniques class. The subject matter could be anything we wanted, but the painting had to be acrylic with all these specific layers of texture and color. Tons of unseeable underpainting went into this.
The subject matter I chose was an intentionally shadowy, desaturated scene. The smaller character in front is Mert, one of my Godling kids, and this is a typical dream for him. His father, the Egyptian god Anubis (god of embalming and dead things and such) only ever visits him in dreams, and he's always vaguely menacing in his dramatic appearance.
And I don't know what Mert's holding. It was there on a composition whim.
ALSO, the title of this piece was insisted upon by my good friend Dana, who found "What's Up, Kiddo?" to be hilarious, seeing as in the real story, Anubis would be more like, "I see you are remaining healthy, my offspring. Have you found the horn yet?"
Anubis has always been one of my favorite gods. I like the drama queens, why oh why.
I'm not sure whether the swirly effects are from the paper or from a texture, but it's really really cool. Enhances the dream style of the image most awesomely. Also, the fact that Mert is the only warm color presence in the picture helps emphasize it too.
yeah i do like this.
particualy atmospheric
